Why only 0.5%?

Firstly, 0.5% of a $2000 laptop is $10.  That’s not bad at all, since if you have a lot of stream or website traffic, you will be accumulating many referrals. Computer and electronic goods are typically valued hundreds to thousands of dollars per unit – so at 0.5%, you will generally be earning single to double digit dollar values per sale. We occasionally carry a few items in our store valued at tens of thousands of dollars, including bulk lots and high-end or pricey custom-modded items. A $10,000 sale would earn you $50 in a pop.

Secondly, there is a widespread misconception that all merchants make a high margin on high-value goods.  This might be the case with diamonds, real estate, designer fashion, and even college textbooks – but this is not at all the case with most computer and electronic goods. Even if there are a few exceptions, we needed to come up with one fixed percentage value that would serve as a viable commission rate across the board.

Do your own independent research and you will see that the computer goods industry runs on one of the leanest margins of all commercial industries!  We don’t exactly run with a 40% markup (- in our dreams!), but rather, often only a few percentage points if we are lucky.  That means we’re giving you a significant chunk of our profits.

When you consider that we have overhead costs to cover as well, you will see that 0.5% was no trivial concession on our part.  If anything, we may decide to lower commission in future because it is too high to sustain.  So early on, now, at the dawn of the program, is the best ever time to become a proactive affiliate. In addition, loyal (> 1 year) affiliates who demonstrate great aptitude in referrals will receive exclusive coupons to use at the store.

The point of being an affiliate is that all your referrals will add up.  Affiliate earnings scale fantastically if you command a lot of stream or website traffic in high-relevance content areas (e.g. gaming, PC enthusiasts, etc.).

It takes little effort for you to make a good plug for us. You can incorporate your unique referrer’s link into website banners, YouTube links, etc. – and if a referee converts (makes a purchase), we will reward you with real money.  It’s really that simple and there are no catches, save a few exceptions cases where our profitability is too negatively implicated – we spell this out fairly and in good faith elsewhere (see When do I not get paid?).
